Ride Your Bike to Work Day

The History of Ride Your Bike to Work Day

The first Ride to Work Day was in 1992 and it is now the largest motorcycle event with the most amount of people. This is a day that encourages people who own motorcycles to ride them to work in order to increase awareness about the benefits associated with riding motorcycles to the general public. The non-profit Ride to Work was created in 2001 to promote and organize the event.

In 2013, there were an estimated one million American participants. However, it is also an international event that helps promote awareness and social connections in all areas of the world. It is celebrated in other countries such as Germany, Israel, France, Slovenia, Ecuador, the United Kingdom and many others. It was originally scheduled for the third Wednesday in July. Yet, the date for the event was changed to the third Monday in July for countries like Argentina which experiences winter during the month of July.

Overall, Ride to Work Day helps to promote the use of motorcycles. They use less fossil fuels, are easier to maneuver and consume less space both on the road and in parking lots. The abundance of bikers on one day shows politicians and the general public the prevalence of bikers and that motorcyclists are from every demographic. They hope to highlight issues such as parking restrictions, distracted drivers and legally sharing a lane. This day also shows how motorcycles can help to reduce traffic in cities. In England, a 2010 survey revealed that around 59% of drivers wished they could ride a motorcycle because the roads were so hectic.

In the end, Ride to Work Day is a social day. Motorcycling is a social tool to bond with other people on the road. They can also share their love for riding their motorcycle with coworkers and friends. Bikers know on that day that people all over the world are riding with them in order to promote something they are all passionate about. Riding a motorcycle is more than just efficient and convenient- it is fun!
