All The Gear All The Time
When you think motorcycle safety gear, a helmet is probably the first thing that comes to mind. But, in reality, protective gear involves so much more! In light of our All The Gear, All The Time (ATGATT) campaign, we’ve compiled a list of must-haves for every motorcyclist wanting to stay safe on the road.
Motorcycle Safety Gear
Motorcycle Helmets
Did you know there are actually two requirements to legally ride without a helmet in Florida? You must be older than 21 and you must have an insurance policy that exceeds $10,000 in medical benefits.
We know, we know. There is nothing better than the wind in your hair, the wind on your face, the sense of freedom that comes from riding. But even though going helmet-free is not completely illegal, riding a motorcycle without a helmet is dangerous and irresponsible.
Helmets not only protect your head from potential injury they can also cut down on wind noise, deflect bugs and guard against bad weather.
Motorcycle Jackets
Yes, it is Florida. Yes, it is hot. But you know what is worse? Losing your skin to road rash. Plus the moving air caused by driving creates a cooling effect that can make riding jackets essential. Jackets designed specifically for riding help prevent and reduce injury. They also help reduce wind flow and help regulate your body temperature.
And these days you don’t even have to worry about looking lame! Protective gear is designed to be both functional and stylish. Leather jackets for example, not only look cool a great choice as it is highly resistant against cuts, scrapes, bruises, etc.
Motorcycle Shoes
Put those tennis shoes back in the closet and don’t even think about flip flops! It’s time to invest in a good pair of protective footwear for your motorcycle rides. Shoes can prevent a number of injuries including broken or crushed ankles.
Look for shoes or boots that cover your ankle. The shoes should also be made from leather or another durable material. They don’t necessarily have to be made for motorcycles but don’t forget to take shifting into consideration.
Motorcycle Gloves
Why are gloves important? An accident, even a slow moving one, can render your hands completely useless. Gloves protect your hands and lower the severity of accident- caused injuries. Think about it. When a person falls, hands instinctually reach for the ground to break the fall. Do yourself a favor and make gloves a priority.
Look for gloves that allow adequate movement but do not slip or slide on your hands. You must be able to firmly grip the handles with confidence and ease.
