5 Tips for Riding in Cold Weather
We understand that being a dedicated biker means riding your motorcycle through even the most bitter weather, and we’re not discouraging you. But there are certain things you need to do in order to keep yourself safe and comfortable on a motorcycle when Winter rolls in. Here are some tips to keep riding during the cold winter months.
1. Make sure your insurance covers year-round riding. Some insurance companies offer discounts for taking months off during the more hazardous seasons–make sure your insurance plan isn’t one of them.
2. Pack on the layers. Vests, gloves, jackets and heat-trapping bottom layers are a good idea for cold temperatures, even in Florida. At high speeds, the weather will bite straight through clothes, so make sure your top layer is wind-proof. Protect vulnerable places like your neck and make sure every inch of you is covered. If you plan on taking a long trip in cold weather, you may even consider electric-heated riding gear.
3. Make sure your bike is suited for the weather. You know your bike, and you should follow the guidelines laid out by your manufacturer. Some motorcycles require different care in the colder months; a thinner oil might make your bike run more efficiently, and you may need different tires that grip better at cooler temperatures. You can also add a fairing to your bike to direct wind away from you.
4. Avoid dangerous, vision-blocking visor fog. To keep your visor from fogging in cooler weather, keep it open toward the bottom and use a scarf or balaclava to cover the exposed skin. There are also anti-fog visors and coatings available for sale, but we recommend researching these products thoroughly before purchasing.
5. Don’t push yourself too far. If you feel cold, shivery, foggy or otherwise adversely affected by the cold, stop and warm up or cut your ride short.
